First Rules of the Game Part 2

The sport remains one where height us might, and the established of two height categories for players (after the first Olympic basketball tournament in Berlin in 1936 showed the great advantage enjoyed by the taller players) was never applied. In 1967, the Spanish Basketball Association organized a tournament for players of a maximum height of 180 meters (5 foot 11) and five (5) countries responded; Brazil, France, Philippines, the United States and host Spain. The United States, capitalizing on the last seconds charging foul called against Filipino skipper, Edgardo Ocampo, banked on the free throw conversions to win the game and the tournament with Spain placing second and the Philippines, third.

It was the first and last basketball tournament played with a height limit. After the 1936 Olympics, the center jump, as stated earlier, was eliminated. In the 1956 Fifth World Basketball Congress in Melbourne, the 30-second rule to combat the ''freeze'' (a team must shoot within 30 seconds of possession) was approved.

Substitutions, limited to two (2) in Berlin, was increased to five (5) by the time in London Olympics, thence seven (7) for the Helsinki meet and Finally nine (9) for tournaments of more than three days (although the limit remained 12 players for any given game).

After Berlin, the rule on fouls specified ''four (4) personal fouls disqualify the player.'' After Helsinki in 1952, the disqualification on the sixth foul was decided and changes of rules be made only every eight years, save in exceptional circumstances. In 1968, the center court line, which was eliminated in Rome, was re instead.

In the 1992 Barcelona, Spain Olympics, FIBA made historical changes in the rules, allowing NBA players and professionals to participate, thus the formation of the USA Dream Team, composed of NBA superstars, as the official USA team to the Olympics, emerging as world champions.
